If you need to browse the contents of an external hard disk drive connected to your computer, then you should be able to just double click on its icon on the desktop. If you do not see the icon on your desktop, then please make sure the external drive is powered on, connected, and that your Finder settings are configured as shown below.

My WD Passport for Mac won't show up on my desktop anymore. I can feel it whirl to start up and then it stops. I've previously run the disk utility and done repairs and got it to work but now that doesn't even get it to work. I have a white, 2006 Macbook and it is connected by the firewire port.
