• fixing bugs: pick a bug in the SourceForge tracker, correct it and submit a patch
• implement a new feature: you can either submit a patch or propose an extension
• build KompoZer on another platform (e.g. win64) or submit another package (e.g. slackware)

Building KompoZer from source

Downloaded the iso image and proceeded to make a Mac OS X bootable USB on windows. To create a bootable media to install Mac OS X leopard on my old macbook A1181. I used imageusb and installed. I was very happy to find this 10.5.4 version which worked perfectly. Many thanks to all. Linux, Mac OS X, Windows 7 (32 bit), Windows 7 (64 bit), Windows Vista, Windows XP. Without having to manually download them first. Verdict: KompoZer is a compact.

If you want to contribute patches or builds for KompoZer, the first thing to do is to build it, obviously.

Apple mac developer library. You will find detailed instructions at the Mozilla Developer Center. Here’s a quick how-to:

1. check the build requirements for your platform: Windows™, MacOS X™ or Linux
   
2. grab the sources, either from the latest source tarball (see the project page) or from the SVN trunk:
3. copy the “mozconfig” file for your platform, from the mozilla/composer/config directory to mozilla/.mozconfig
   e.g. for MacOS X:
4. get in the 'mozilla' directory:
5. build with:

The result of your build will be in mozilla/obj-***/dist/bin directory.

You might find other useful instructions in the mozconfig file.

Developing KompoZer Add-ons

The Mozilla Developer Center should provide all necessary information to develop extensions or themes.

This documentation applies to all Mozilla-based apps, which includes KompoZer.

License

All KompoZer patches have to be tri-licensed (MPL/GPL/LGPL).

You may develop your own add-on with the license you wish (including a proprietary one); but if you want to give your add-on to be included into KompoZer some day, it has to be tri-licensed.

A great alternative to successful commercial WYSIWYG HTML editors, this program is a must-have among the web development community for easy and quick HTML editing with support for templates, FTP transfers, tabbed editing and for most HTML elements like divs, tables, forms and other tags.

Like anyone would expect a modern WYSIWYG editor to do, KompoZer can style your elements in an almost unlimited amount of ways. It supports CSS, applying styles to elements (like spans or divs) and styling your page to look neat and professional. This can all be done in the 'design' view. For those with a little more experience in editing HTML, you can also use a source-only view or a split layout while being able to edit the raw html and preview it at the same time.

For those new to web page editing, you might be surprised to learn how easy KompoZer makes it to position elements. You can place images, text, headings and virtually any else in a layer and position it on the web page anywhere you'd like by clicking the layer button (in the top-right corner) and moving the newly created layer with your cursor.

If you're coming from experience with Adobe Dreamweaver, be prepared to say hello to not only lightning fast loading and editing work, but also a rather familiar layout, albeit in a vastly different order. With hardly any real serious contenders these days for web editing besides Dreamweaver, KompoZer is truly a gem, especially when Dreamweaver has your high-end system bogged down for simple rendering.

What blew us away was when we pasted the source of Canadian Content's home page into the source window of KompoZer, it rendered almost immediately. When doing that with Dreamweaver, it almost leads to a system crash and can take over a minute in Dreamweaver.

KompoZer is a project forked from NVU, another open source web editor. It is far from just a simple editor and combines great HTML editing tools while keeping the program fast. The speed of KompoZer can be attributed to collaborative community development. Just like the software itself, KompoZer is powered by Gekco, the open source Mozilla backend.

Overall, if you're a professional with years of experience and prefer to preview your work while coding HTML or you're just getting started with creating web sites, KompoZer is suitable for nearly anybody.
